A review and a promo! 16 August 2024
Science communicators have reflected in depth on the successes and failures of their work throughout the recent Covid-19 pandemic. Lessons learned still conclude that connecting with people through storytelling and through trusted institutions, remains crucial. Theatre-makers are storytellers. So it follows that the Royal Society of Victoria was keen to bring Fulbright Specialist, Heather Massie and her award-winning, internationally acclaimed one-woman show, HEDY! The Life & Inventions of Hedy Lamarr to Australia for National Science Week.
More interested in inventing than acting, Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr developed a close collaboration with avante-garde composer and pianist George Antheil, whose work inspired her to devise a patented method of ‘frequency-hopping’ technology which is now fundamental to modern communications, including what is built into wifi and our mobile phones. Her story both reveals the complex interplay at the heart of many scientific ‘breakthroughs’ and offers a glimpse into Hedy’s open and seeking mind.
Hedy's story also enriches our understanding of scientific progress and its cultural contexts.
In Lily Tomlin-esque fashion … Massie channels the iconic star … vividly yet matter-of-factly, and often very humorously … In a balance of high energy and poise, Heather Massie is no less than captivating.

If you want a fun night of award-winning theatre, a glimpse into a fascinating world, a story to share with friends, a time with one inspiring woman whose play is inspiring other young women across many continents to consider the unconventional, inventive and curious life of a scientist, go to HOWLER Bar & Theatre, Brunswick, for one night only, Tuesday 20 August, 6 for 6:30pm. The Show runs for 90mins, with an added interval and question time. Under 18s welcome if accompanied.
